Prop firm rules explained

What counts as hedging at a prop firm, and does long MNQ + short MES (or long NAS100 + short gold) count?
It depends on the firm, instruments, and whether the positions are in one account or separate accounts. Tradeify prohibits opposing MNQ and MES positions across all its account types because both belong to its equity-index group. Lucid permits opposite positions in different contracts within one account but prohibits correlated opposing positions across accounts. Apex prohibits opposing positions in the same or correlated instruments, without listing correlation groups on its cited page. MyFundedFutures permits hedging unrelated assets, while Goat Funded Trader defines prohibited hedging using the same asset. These rules do not establish blanket permission for long NAS100 and short gold.
Can I get flagged for hedging by accident, for example from copier lag or a forgotten position on another account?
Yes, accidental opposite positions can trigger review, but enforcement depends on the firm's criteria. Topstep's Trading Combine, Express Funded, and Live accounts prohibit cross-account hedging; an initial warning allows a brief opportunity to resolve it, and warnings alone do not affect payouts. Tradeify's automated breach check requires opposing positions, an overlap exceeding 10 seconds, and hedge profit exceeding $150 together; cross-account and correlated-product hedges are reviewed separately. These thresholds do not authorize intentional brief hedges. Close accidental opposing positions promptly and distinguish a warning from a confirmed account breach.
What is a consistency rule and how is it calculated?
A consistency rule limits the share of total profit attributable to your best trading day. Divide best-day profit by total profit and multiply by 100. Topstep's Trading Combine uses 55%; a $1,800 best day requires approximately $3,273 total profit. MyFundedFutures evaluations use 30% for Rapid EOD and 50% for Rapid Intraday and ordinary Pro evaluations, but the Pro one-day-pass option has no consistency rule. Alpha Futures Standard and Zero Qualified accounts use a 40% threshold measured since the last withdrawal request. Its page conflicts on equality, so do not assume exactly 40% qualifies.
Does the consistency rule reset after a payout?
Yes, where the account has a payout consistency requirement. Topstep's Express Funded Account Consistency path resets its calculation after a payout request, and the next window starts on the following trading day. Trades on the request day do not count toward that new window. Alpha Futures Standard, Zero, and Direct Qualified accounts measure consistency using profit since the last withdrawal request. Advanced Qualified accounts have no consistency requirement. Remaining account balance is not automatically new-cycle profit, and each applicable account must satisfy its payout requirements again.
Trailing drawdown vs end-of-day drawdown vs static drawdown: what's the difference?
They differ in what the loss floor follows. A static drawdown never moves: RebelsFunding measures its Overall Drawdown "from the initial account size", so a $10,000 account with 10% must never fall below $9,000 equity. An end-of-day (EOD) trailing drawdown rises with your highest closing balance. Tradeify's example: start at $100,000 with a $3,500 drawdown, floor $96,500; close day 1 at $103,000 and the floor becomes $99,500; close day 2 at $101,000 and it stays at $99,500. An intraday trailing drawdown follows your highest equity during the session, which Alpha Futures contrasts with its own EOD method. Some EOD floors stop trailing at the starting balance, as at Topstep and Alpha Futures.
What is a daily loss limit, and what happens if I hit it?
A daily loss limit restricts losses within a trading day, but its availability and consequences depend on the account. Topstep's Trading Combine and Express Funded Account DLL is optional; triggering the applicable DLL pauses trading until the next session. Tradeify Growth, Lightning, and Select Daily Funded accounts have a soft-breach DLL, while Select Flex does not. FundedNext Futures applies one to Rapid Daily and Rapid Pro with the add-on. FundingPips and applicable RebelsFunding accounts can terminate after a daily-loss breach. Open losses can count, and slippage can breach a separate maximum-loss floor before daily protection prevents further losses.
Why was my prop account liquidated when my final balance ended above the drawdown limit?
Because firms measure the limit on open (unrealized) losses in real time, not only on closed trades. Topstep says that if the account "touches or falls below a limit at any point, it's a violation", even when slippage during liquidation leaves the final balance above the limit. Its example: limit $48,000, an open trade drags the balance to $47,750, liquidation fires, and the account closes at $48,050, still breached. Tradeify enforces its drawdown in real time against net liquidation value, and FundingPips monitors equity, so a floating loss can close the account "even with the trade still open". Watch equity, not balance.
Can I copy trades between my own prop firm accounts?
Yes at several firms, subject to ownership, account, and platform restrictions. MyFundedFutures permits copying across account types. Apex permits copying among your own Performance Accounts within its 20-account household limit, without prohibited hedging. FundedNext Futures permits copying your own trades between accounts you own, including accounts at other firms. FundedNext CFD permits copying between your own Challenge accounts only within $300,000 combined capital, with a designated master account; funded-account copying and external cloud copiers are prohibited. FundingPips permits copying between your own FundingPips accounts and outward to external accounts, but prohibits external inbound copying. These permissions do not authorize copying other traders.
Can I trade during news (CPI, FOMC, NFP) at a prop firm?
It depends on the firm, account, event, and instrument. Tradeify permits news trading subject to its other rules. Topstep blocks new opening trades in listed equity-index and metals mini contracts on simulated accounts during the five minutes before and after CPI, with separate micro limits. MyFundedFutures Rapid and Pro Sim Funded accounts must be flat with no orders two minutes before and after Tier 1 releases; evaluations are exempt from that restriction, but prohibited strategies remain banned. Alpha Futures Direct, Standard, and Zero Qualified accounts may hold positions but cannot execute orders in the relevant four-minute news window. Lucid permits news trading on Flex, Pro, and Direct, while red-folder news trading breaches LucidDaily.
How do prop firm payouts work: buffer, minimum days, profit split and first payout?
Payout requirements depend on the firm, plan, and purchase history. Topstep XFA Standard requires five $150 winning days and, after the first payout, positive profit since the previous payout. Requests are limited to 50% of balance and applicable caps; eligible DLL purchases increase those caps. The usual split is 90/10, with grandfathered exceptions. MyFundedFutures Rapid Sim Funded accounts require a buffer, a $500 minimum withdrawal, and at least 24 hours after the first trade for initial eligibility. Alpha Futures Standard, Advanced, and Zero Qualified accounts require five $200 winning days; Direct accounts instead use withdrawal profit targets and consistency requirements, without a winning-day minimum.
Why do prop firms deny payouts?
Firms can deny or delay payouts for rule violations or unmet eligibility conditions; the cited policies do not establish the most common cause. Topstep can deny payouts for prohibited conduct. Alpha Futures Direct, Standard, and Zero Qualified accounts face payout consequences for restricted news-window executions. Tradeify funded accounts cannot request payouts unless both its trade-duration and profit-duration tests are satisfied, but failing those tests does not itself fail the account. FundingPips identifies improper EA use as a possible reason for denial, and Goat Funded Trader lists account-access policy violations as grounds for payout rejection.
Evaluation vs funded vs live account: what changes?
An evaluation tests performance against program rules; a funded account may pay rewards while remaining simulated, whereas a live account trades real capital. Topstep's Express Funded Account starts at $0. At live transition, its XFAs close, transferred funds are capped at the applicable account size, and the initial tradable amount is generally 20%, subject to a $10,000 minimum. Its trading API is unavailable for Live Funded Accounts. Lucid's standard live transition starts accounts at $0, but LucidMaxx live accounts start above $0. MyFundedFutures describes simulated-funded plans, and RebelsFunding's Evaluation and RCF accounts remain simulated.
What does "one account per person" and KYC mean at a prop firm?
KYC (know your customer) is identity verification, usually a government ID plus a live selfie, checked before you are funded or paid. Topstep requires it before your second purchase; MyFundedFutures requires it before trading a sim-funded account, and "only one profile can be verified per individual". "One account per person" means one user profile, not one trading account: Goat Funded Trader allows one registered account but multiple challenges. Funded-account caps are often per household: FundedNext Futures allows 5 active funded accounts per household, defined by a shared address or IP; Lucid allows 5 funded per household; Apex allows 20 active Performance Accounts per household. Apex calls multiple user accounts "a bannable offense".
What percentage of funded traders actually get paid?
Topstep reports that 33.3% of individual participants at its Funded Level received a payout during 2025. That denominator includes both Express Funded and Live Funded accounts, so it is not a live-account-only rate. Its disclosure also reports 16.8% successful Trading Combines, 51.8% of participants reaching the Funded Level at least once, and 0.71% of XFA participants being called up to Live. These figures use different denominators and do not establish an industry-wide payout rate. A separate first-day-loss statistic should not be treated as part of the 2025 disclosure without a matching cohort and period.
Can I use a VPS or VPN for prop trading?
It varies widely by firm and sometimes by account type, and firms treat VPS and VPN differently. Topstep bans both: "The use of VPS, VPNs, and remote servers is prohibited". FundingPips also bars either while accessing your account. Alpha Futures permits a VPS but not a VPN used to hide or change your IP address. Goat Funded Trader allows a VPN but, for accounts bought from August 12, 2026, bans a VPS on One Step, Two Step, Instant Premium and Pay Later accounts. FundedNext Futures allows both on Challenge and funded accounts, while FundedNext's CFD program bars a VPS on accounts of $50,000 and above. Apex bans VPNs, proxies and cloud servers used to disguise your identity, device or location to evade rules.
Can I use a trading bot, EA or automated strategy at a prop firm?
Automation permission depends on the firm and account. Apex and Alpha Futures prohibit automated trading; RebelsFunding does not support it on paid Evaluation or RCF accounts. Topstep permits compliant bots through its trading API on eligible simulated accounts, with personal-device and no-HFT restrictions; Live Funded accounts are excluded. Tradeify requires sole ownership, exclusive use within Tradeify, verification, and no HFT. FundingPips generally permits full automation with a personally developed EA and ownership proof, but 1K Instant permits third-party EAs, while Monthly Competition prohibits all EAs. MyFundedFutures permits customized automation that follows its rules and does not exploit simulated fills.
Is there a minimum hold time at prop firms, and what is microscalping?
There is no universal minimum holding time; each firm defines its own restrictions. Lucid flags accounts when more than 50% of profit comes from trades held five seconds or less. Tradeify funded accounts require more than half of trades and profit to come from trades held longer than 10 seconds before payout requests. FundedNext Futures measures profitable trades closed within 10 seconds per cycle, warning at 30% and applying account-specific consequences at 40% or more; losing trades are excluded. Alpha Futures targets prohibited patterns rather than imposing a universal two-minute minimum. RebelsFunding requires at least 30 seconds on paid Evaluation trades and 60 seconds on RCF trades.
